Not so Wild about this One.
Ok, so it’s the 50th anniversary of Australia’s first rock ‘n’ roll hit, Johnny O’Keefe’s ‘Wild One,’ so yeah I get it that a tribute was inevitable. Did it really have to be Jet that did the cover? Really?
The Aussie band, best known for appropriating Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust For Life,’ have actually teamed up with Iggy to record the tribute, due out July 19. Why? Well Mr Pop did already cover the song in 1986, so yeah I get the reason for the team-up.
Naturally, when covering a song (unless youre a local pub tribute/covers band) you wanna add a dash of your own flavour to the tune. But horns!? Are you freakin’ serious – horns?
Unless you’re INXS, serious rock bands -as a rule- should steer clear of horns. Even INXS in their current sub-standard incarnation don’t even employ the brass.
Yet another cringeworthy milestone in the career of Jet.
Speaking of cringeworthy…
Just in case you didnt think the 80’s were coming back in a big way (see Hall & Oates & Chromeo) 80’s power balladeers REO Speedwagon are gearing up to play a flood relief benefit gig on July 16 in Iowa, USA.
The band that brought powerhouse hits like “Keep On Loving You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling” have made little impact on the music scene since 1985 despite putting out 20+ albums since then, including one as recent as last year. But you’ve gotta ask ‘why?’
Obviously it’s not just Adam Sandler thats still buying their albums. I can’t think who it might be though…
Less Cowbell x2!
