“Scouting for Girls are like the sound of Satan’s scrotum emptying”
Probably the best article ever written about indie music this week. I was intitially expecting the typical foray by a newspaper into youth culture, but then realise we’re talking about a British broadsheet, and faith was rapidly restored. Click me, and just realise how quote-worthy this article is.
Back in 1998/1999 I lived in the UK on a staple diet of Blur, Oasis, Kula Shaker, Mansun, Sterephonics (they weren’t good then either though), The Verve, new up and comers like Muse and Sigur Ros, reading stuff from NME, and the much better Melody Maker (and listening to all their free CD compilations). Even then, 10 years ago and less, Indie still meant ‘independent’ rather than cardigans. Don’t get me wrong, I have my grungy cardigans, my tight jeans, and my vox amp, but I still feel The Wombats are shit and would never have gotten anywhere if they didn’t happen to release their song whilst there was a wave of Joy Division mania occuring.
Queens of the Stoneage have a concert coming up in LA for The Natasha Shneider Memorial Fund. With plenty of special guests, this will be an awesome show, let alone a way to remember a great musician and help pay off her battle with cancer.
TV On The Radio have a new album out mid-late September. Maybe Sept 20 or 27, who knows. Excitement!
Eagles of Death Metal have a new one out soon as well!
“Others held placards saying “Kill the State in Yourself” and “A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity”, both of which would make terrific emo song titles…” – Yet again, more quotable British broadsheet fun!
