Does anyone still read this shit?

with 3 comments

Welcome back to a new year. I probably should have made a new years resolution to update this more often, but then sometimes I make resolutions to quit smoking, even though I don’t smoke. It’s funny at the time, trust me.

Sex on Fire won the Hottest 100. If you didn’t see that coming, you’re an idiot. Plain and simple. Maaaaaybe Electric Feel had a chance, a really slim chance, but those $1.40 odds were correct on the Kings.

Canberra photographer Andrew Mayo has been at it for a while now and is putting together an exhibition at a few places in Canberra. Check it out, because galleries are so much cooler and more ‘hip’ than Flickr will EVER be.

I try to keep things a little highbrow on these pages (really, I do), but this is news that is too crazy not to post…

Does anyone remember Operator Please? They did that Ping Pong song on the Forrest Gump soundtrack right? Well anyway, they once were semi-important, but then their keyboardist Sarah Gardiner left. The last time I saw them, she was bawling her eyes out on stage and it was actually quite depressing to watch, and I mean that.

Well, OP hasn’t been heard of in a while, but it seems Gardiner has moved onto greener pastures: Pornography. Don’t worry, it’s SFW.

To put this bluntly, I did not see that coming. No pun intended. You have to ask if she thought that no one would notice.

Now, to get more people reading this, and to get us to write more, how about you write in the comments section which Australian alterna-pop star you think will follow this path to pornography…

Hola!

Saw this on the Polaroids forum today and HAD to copy/paste it…

I just sat down at my desk
shortly afterwards, I was greeted by a HUGE cockroach
I looked all over my desk for an appropriate object to squash him with
alas, I could not find anything
until I noticed the new vines album which got sent to me by their hopeful label

that pretty much sums what I think of the new vines album

k thx bai

Kinda?

I would have squashed the album with the cockroach.

Comedy gold. Fair point too.

Last night I went and shot The Getaway Plan at The Albert Hall in Canberra (os opposed to London). I didn’t so much get into the band (pop-emo isn’t exactly my bag, believe it or not) but the kids seemed to like it, even if they were being squashed against the stage due to no barrier. Am I complaining? Absolutely not! It was like the old club gigs you see in photos of bands like Nirvana, Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag, Refused et al… Hell, any band who gigged before OH&S became more of an issue than fun. Just saying.

I have photos up on Flickr but due to contractual agreements with another website, I’m pretty sure I can’t post them here, so go and boost my Flickr views please! Thanks.

Fuckin’ A.

Looky here, there’s even a new demo. Does anyone else see that album cover and get it confused with the new Less Than Jake cover?

Just me? Alright.

Time to go look at iPhones through the window. Damn you Vodafone, be more competitive.

Why Mogwai is better than you are…

Holy shit! It’s totally blissful music. Download that now before I download your face with my fist.

I’m sorry, that was harsh, can we still be friends? A bit of thanks go to these guys for the headsup. Probably one of the raddest blogs out there when it comes to cool tunes. I can only hope to somewhat emulate what they do… Click on the Mogwai photo for the Flickr photostream I psuedo stole it off…

Speaking of flickr, I uploaded some more artsy shots. The unfortunate side effect of no good gigs in the last month and no organisation willing to get me on the door anymore has resulted in no gig shooting for Simon. I’ll be there with a camera and all that for Snowman and others though. I can’t vouch for quality.

If only I had myspace unblocked at work, I’d try and post up a whole bunch of amazing new bands I’d find on there… Sucks already.

Oh, I was checking our referrals and some fixed gear bike forum in New York keeps clicking on our blog. I don’t know what link was posted because all I get when I click on them is a sign in page, but hey! I really want a fixed gear bike, that shit is so cool. Fuck lowriders, fuck bmx’s, gimme gimme fixed wheels and get rid of those brakes! Yeah! Seriously, I’d buy one of these, but I don’t have $2000, however I do have a $20 revolve special and I’m gonna work that sucker into a singlespeed. Faded fluro orange baby! Woo!

Whilst staying up late and watching Rage on Friday night I saw this video from The BPA, which it turns out is Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim and the totally awesome David Byrne from Talking Heads. After initially being disappointed, the video turned out to be quite clever. Technically, it is safe for work, but probably best if your boss doesn’t catch you watching that.

Fuck Glastonbury, I wish I’d have gone to this. It was a possibility too, but no. I’d have rathered to save up and buy my bass instead. Stupid stupid stupid.

Snowman – The Horse, The Rat, and The Swan (Review) + MORE!

with 2 comments

Not only do these guys make good music, but they have good art direction. Winnar!

The Horse, The Rat, and The Swan is probably my local album of the year. Big call, I know, but seriously, this thing is epic. Spooky as hell in parts, the album brings in some awesome sounds to the mix. First track Our Mother (She Remembers) has some awesome distorted string action harking back to Touched off Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and anyone who reads this knows I hold a great big euphimistic candle for those guys, so Snowman, you get points for that.

First single (and second track, just to be all chronological and shit), We Are The Plague, begins with a banging rhythm, then some soft ‘coos’ come in, some unintelligible lyrics join that, more coos, reverb-ed out guitars, more lyrics (only a bit more recognisable as English), and still the same beat, just in case you hadn’t figured out that this song is trying to repeatedly bash your head in to steal your mind and eventually your soul. So I guess, don’t mess with this song, because it’s the supernatural Patrick Bateman of songs. God that book was graphic. Rats anyone? Segue! Alright!

Other tracks worth losing your shit over are Daniel Was A Timebomb, The Horse [Parts 1 and 2] (which is THE most epic of epic songs on this album in my opinion), The Gods of the Upperhouse… actually, if I keep doing this, I’ll name every song on the album, so just get the album. Downloading is for 15yr olds anyway.

91/100 Belinda Neal coverups.

In other news, Cut Copy (via Modular‘s weekly newsletter) has gone and got Hearts on Fire remixed by Midnight Juggernauts and you (yes, you!) can download ‘this’ 80’s synth and samples explosion for FREE!! Click me! Is ‘this’ the Juggies remix though? In my iTunes it’s says the Joakim remix. Am I stupid and missing a psuedonym? Possibly. Anyways, I’m not the biggest fan of the remix, but then again, I didn’t like Hearts on Fire to begin with. Nathan will hate me for saying that.

Also on the Modular newsletter was this picture:

If that doesn’t scream “Awesome facial hair!”, not much does. Unless we’re talking these guys. If only I could grow a healthy rug as opposed to the 1970’s council housing carpet I have on my face. Rancid.

AC/DC are also releasing some DVD’s of their old school concerts soon. I’m talking Madison Square Garden and the like. I’d link you, but I heard this from that ‘real world’ place you’ve heard about. Anyway, I only tell you this because when they are released, you might want to steer clear of K Mart and Aldi as all the bogans buy up the cheap DVD players. On the plus side, there will be a whole stack of perfectly usable VHS players in your local tip soon for those of us who still have those old tapes of Rage sitting in their house. Add this to their new album, and you get a whole lot of apathy from me. Not enough to NOT write about it though.

Coincidentally, Snowman’s We Are The Plague is indie clip of the week on Rage, so hit it up.

This guy takes amazing photos. He’s also moving to Australia soon, so expect some localised content, and someone should hook him up with all the photo passes he needs, because seriously, look at those photos! Wowie!

I know I ask for a lot (turntables, respect, my dignity back, and all those are still needed too) but does anyone have a delay pedal they want to sell? The crappier the better. Hit me up.

Um, what else… Check out our pages on the side ——> which tell you all sorts of awesome info about us (not really) and which sites we think are the shizniggity (yes really).
