Following on from the trend taking over the music industry, or not, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is releasing their 5th full length ‘The Effects of 333’ at 3.33pm PST (Pacific Standard Time ie. California, here we come/rest in peace/they’ve got one in South Patagonia) on their website.
This will be without Nick Jago – King of the Awkward Silence, so they’ve got Leah Shapiro from The Raveonettes touring band onboard.
Apparently it’s an instrumental, if their comments on the website are to be believed. Sweet. Way to copy Nine Inch Nails again, although they did follow you guys at Pepsi Live in Argentina.
Nonetheless, excitement reigns. New album as of Sunday morning. Yeow.
Whilst trawling L’Internets for house music and remixes after an epic DJ session on Saturday night where I learnt to fully love 126-132bpm (like I needed help), I came across the very anti-thesis of what I was looking for, and I loved it.
Made Out of Babies are a Brooklyn heavy-noise-post-something-metal-ish-rock band that make some fucking cool tunes. For the past few months I’ve been flirting with punk and metal like the ex lovers we are, and I think I may end up cheating on the more ‘open minded’ (if you want to get all pretentious) indie-dance scene I’ve been going out with. It could be a quarter life crisis, or it could be the impending 4 hours 2 days of Soundwave I’ll be watching whilst waiting for Nine Inch Nails, that I’ll need to love. Mind you, about 45mins-an hour of that will be Face to Face, so I’m sure I’ll survive.
Also, in case you didn’t get the hint, I DJ at Bar 32 on Saturday nights any time from 2230-0330, so get down there and listen to me try and mix house with dance with post-punk with metal with etc. $5 per request, and I can’t guarantee I’ll play it.
Is it because of the Olympics that Axl decided now would be a good time to release the album? Should have done it 08.08.08 dude…
Just make sure you make it through the wanky opening, because it gets A-MAZ-ING. I would have said that this album would have sucked, and it probably will, but at least it can get me excited. No, not like that.
Picture with Robin Finck only because of the Nine Inch Nails connection.
I know secretly you harbour great yearnings to spend a summer day in the heat, wearing black clothes/makeup/shoes/the tightest of tight jeans…
Now, I wouldn’t go to one of these festivals. Oh no. I long since abandoned the punk/pre-cursor to Emo/hardcore musical tastes I had when I hung up the skateboard and began tertiary education. I would have thought only a Rollins-era Black Flag reunion AND a Dead Kennedy’s reunion co-headlining festival could get me to go, but oh no…

*furiously starts F5’ing all ticket/airline/hotel websites*
Thanks to the wonder that is my work’s internet filters blocking my access to Myspace, and various proxy sites shitting themselves trying to load the music player on Myspace, I’m yet to hear the new remixes of No Pussy Blues by Grinderman, and it’s pretty much killing me. Hopefully they will put these out officially sometime soon and I can start getting my pillhead on to them. Assuming that’s what they sound like. More details can be found here.
Whilst I’m leeching news directly from Pitchfork, The Gutter Twins have also announced that they’re releasing an iTunes only exclusive EP with proceeds going to go to the Natasha Shneider Memorial Fund. Help a good cause and get some good tunes? Done deal.
The good kids at Antiquiet got themselves into a bit of trouble over the GnR leak they did a while ago. Isn’t it funny that the United States Government calls Russia for going in with too much force on Georgia, however it’s totally reasonable for 5 FBI agents to wake up a BLOGGER (hardly the most advanced and dangerous species on the planet) at 5am in the morning and then try and set a $50 grand bail? The worst part is there’s no fucking Chinese Democracy to show for it! 14 years Axl! DIE!!!!11
Nine Inch Nails’ magnum opus, The Downward Spiral, is being re-released on vinyl as a money making scheme now that he’s left Interscope part of the 60th anniversary of vinyl. Here’s what the man himself had to say…
You may have heard there’s a new re-release of The Downward Spiral on vinyl. I heard that, too. I have no idea what it is or what’s on it because the band has had no involvement in it.
So basically, Interscope will be getting more money and the artist will be fucked over? Not much news to me.
I’m off to listen to Does It Offend You, Yeah? some more. A review of their old album will be up (or at least promised about some more) soon.
So, the rumours were true and the 505th most original band in Sydney has called it a day. Chris Ross (the bassist) left due to ‘irreconcilable differences’ and Myles Heskitt (the other guy (a fancy way of saying ‘drummer’)) left because he didn’t want to be part of a changed lineup. How funny!
Read the press release, and breathe a sigh of relief, here. Good to know originality has a fighting chance.
The karaoke could be over! After 5 years plugging the same songs, Australia’s answer to Jet could be climbing their Stairway to Heaven. Now, I may be Paranoid, but I’m pretty sure there ain’t a Whole Lotta LoveJJJ’s website… left in the band, and they’ve stopped giving interviews with only this short statement on their website.
As soon as triple j arrived at Splendour In The Grass on Saurday, much speculation was circulating about Wolfmother’s future. Rumours from the band breaking up through to line-up changes were being mentioned. triple j was due to interview singer Andrew Stockdale a couple of hours before their appearance closing the Supertop Stage at the Byron Bay festival on Sunday night. Management issued a statement to the station prior to the scheduled interview saying: “The band is dealing with some internal issues at the moment. They’re hoping to resolve them in the next few weeks but in the meantime it just wouldn’t be appropriate for any member to be doing any interviews – even with triple j.”
I’m also assuming they don’t want to talk to us either. Seems like they’ve run out of psych bands to emulate. That, or they want to do a reunion tour next year. They could be upset about Modular’s $5.9 million loss. If they break up, then release an album and become revered for it because of their ‘unrealised potential’ I’ll probably neck myself.
Here’s a good quote…
“The Beatles or Led Zeppelin are the ultimate archetypes for what a rock band can and should be. I’ve just suffered through Wolfmother at some festival we just played. Come on, guys! You know what I mean.
“I’m not saying they do a bad job but they’re a f***ing cover band. Not to single those poor young men out, but . . . ” – Trent Reznor in The Sun
The Financial Times have a nice little article about music downloading. One thing to remember though: To many music fans, the record company, the distribution company, the CD shops, even the band, they all represent ‘the man’. Illegal downloading will always happen because some people are just too cool. We should all bow down before them. Why else would someone illegally download free albums? Torrent speed? Meh.
Speaking of Radiohead, can someone link me to some awesome pictures of their seemingly awesome stage setup? I’m yet to see a great and amazing picture. Much like Nine Inch Nails’ stage setup. It’s all camera phones. Lame.
I’m listening to M83 right now, and this music is so epic that I just know it’s all going to work out. Everything. Ever. Stop worrying. I paid for this too. Your kids can’t rummage through your MP3 collection when you’re older you know…
Where’s Dan Boud been lately?
Did everyone who went enjoy Splendour? Yet again it seems the real fesitval magic happens at the sideshows. Check out the rest of his photos. Awesome.
Oh, and this is the funniest read I’ve had in a long time…
“There is no evidence to suggest that the type of music you listen to will cause you to commit suicide, but those who are vulnerable and at risk of committing suicide may be listening to certain types of music,” the author of the study, Felicity Baker, said yesterday.
However, watch the results from the latter half of the sentence turn into the presumptions in the former half.
